Invader League 12 Map Reveals
Hello there! Seth here - the map guy for Invader League - long time reader, first time contributor to the A Point of Interest blog. I have contributed to Invader League for several seasons & several years now. I’ve played Legion casually & competitively since it released, and I absolutely love the simple but open-ended terrain rules we have in 2.6 & onwards that allow for really creative & thematic tables that create for competitive and engaging games. I’ve been given the distinct honor of showcasing all five of our maps for Round Robin for this season of Invader League. Read on!
Alderaan - "An Effective Demonstration"
Alderaan’s capital city Aldera was a galactic epicenter of science & culture that long avoided the touch of galactic conflict – until now. Its gleaming towers climb to nearly match the mountain ranges that cradle it, and armies that would dare tarnish their majesty would be well-served to deploy units capable of navigating these tall structures.
Alderaan – obviously! – is as old as the Star Wars franchise itself, but it is only recently we’ve gotten close looks at it before the Empire had their way with the peaceful world. This map is loosely based on its skyline seen in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series: its organically-shaped spires climbing above its temperate forests.
Aldhani - "Authority is Brittle"
Aldhani was an unassuming temperate world before it was defiled by the Empire and strip-mined for resources. Its rolling hills and gentle forests are now scarred by Imperial refineries & barracks, inviting yet more conflict between deploying forces.
Aldhani was first introduced to us as the site of the dramatic “heist” in the in the Andor series. An Imperial base in various stages of disrepair is a common sight on many Legion tables – Imperial brutal architecture is too distinct to pass up on. This map sought to realize a fully-walled installation as seen in the show, but with plenty of gated checkpoints and blast holes in the defenses to feel fair and playable on either side of the table.
Barren Moon - "What Remains"
Little is known of this rocky, seemingly lifeless moon near Jabiim. Rocky spires reach to the dark skies, as if attempting to escape the tortured and unstable landscape on which they are trapped. Armies on this moon will find ample cover from these spires but few elevated vantage points, as the natural rock formations leave little purchase for troops.
This nameless moon was featured in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, as the site of the fantastic duel between Vader & his master. The map is deliberately very simple, with only a small handful of repeated terrain features placed strategically around locations where POI tokens would be placed; an Imperial shuttle stands alone to harken back to the inspiration for the map. When making tables it can be tempting to add a lot of different thematic terrain pieces when you find so many cool STLs or Tabletop Simulator assets, but too much variety can add up to a much higher mental burden on players playing your map for the first time. Sticking to one or two repeated obstacles, a couple similar area terrains, and a few grouped varieties of scatter makes the pre-game discussion a breeze, in real life and virtually!
Felucia - "Life on the Edge"
The exotic planet of Felucia was tortured by conflict through the Clone Wars, its healing nysillin plants guarded by lethal wildlife and interested military alike. This scene on the planet features one such nysillin farm, its domiciles now scorch marked and its wildlife protectors slain by invaders.
This map comes to us straight from our magnificent host – the organizer of Invader League Season 12 & the primogenitor of this very blog – Reagan! It is a remix of an Invader classic made by Ben (“ImperialSympathizer”) who sourced many of the assets himself. When designing maps on Tabletop Simulator, it’s a lot of fun but also presents some unique challenges to take maps you already know and love and shuffle the terrain around to make something new. It maintains a lot of familiarity for players who have played on these maps in various seasons or other leagues in the past, and it’s not unlike setting up terrain at your home or gaming store differently each time you play on it! If you’re looking to get started making virtual tables of your own, this is fantastic method for easing yourself into it.
Kijimi - "The Real Black Market"
Kijimi is a frigid and lawless world on the outer rim of the galaxy. Cramped businesses and zig-zagging alleys provide natural refuge for smugglers, cutthroats, and worse. Any organized forces deploying to Kijimi would be best served to watch every corner and question every shadow, or take advantage of the architecture themselves.
The planet Kijimi, and its aptly named spaceport, Kijimi City, were first introduced to us in The Rise of Skywalker, and it was most recently featured as a fully fleshed-out open world setting in the Star Wars: Outlaws video game. The planet has unique architecture in both appearances, clearly drawing on several real-world cultures, which led to a lot of asset-hunting to find something that appropriately echoed the map’s source material while being functional for Legion games!
That’s it for today! There are some more tables to come when we reach the Elimination stage of Invader League! Until then, see you all on the battlefield!
